Solo exhibition by Koh Cheng Kuan

Lucha no Libre

The magnificent set up, colorful masks, high acrobatics difficulty fight, and rapid sequences of holds and moves are the elements which make the Mexican free wrestling an all time famous. However the gorgeous trick or the swift and fierce style cannot hide the fakeness essence of the sport. All the deathliest fight, one climax after another, including the victory and defeat are under the prearrange program situation. However, the audiences are still crazy about it and chooses to believe everything happened in the arena are real.

A friend holding his 2nd solo exhibition, reminded me his words at his 1st exhibition, Pandora boxes,"“革命尚未成功!” . He's now back for his 2nd one, even greater master pieces!

pandora's boxes exhibition

I made a trip back to Kuala Lumpur specially to support my college friend, Shinken's (a.k.a. CK) first solo exhibition. Contemporary paintings that extended the Greek mythology of pandora's box. The show speculates curiosity and the definition of hope while living in this uncertain society.

shinken 本尊

I asked him how he felt that day and he said “革命尚未成功!”

Let's look forward to more great works from him! I wish him all the best!
Check out more of his works here!

Apart from his solo works, I am pleased and honoured to be invited to be part of a collaborated painting for this exhibition. The brief is to depict my interpretation of the theme, pandora's box.

Here's my contribution:

希望方程式
Reformulated Hopes

Acrylic on canvas 12" x 12"

Perfection is the key to survive. Frustration leads one to seek a better way out. Always looking for a better choice and finding a sounder solution that will make things better. The hope to turn things around.

In order to solve the problem, a great deal of effort and sufficient hard work are required. By keeping still, hesitating in doubt, plain waiting and hoping, will never solve the problem. The process of analysing, judging and deciding becomes a formula to every problem.

Turning the symbolic character of pandora's box into a cubic puzzle, the painting denotes hope and optimism. Life is like a complicated puzzle. It's no mystery. For if you try hard enough, all you need is a combination of formula to solve it. Let's try our best combinations!

Is there an easier way out?

Keep hoping. Keep trying. Keep solving. Keep breathing. Keep living.
